All the major local and national media outlets are reporting the Yankees have aquired 1B/3B/OF Eric Hinske from the Pirates for two minor leaguers. I've never been a huge Hinske fan, but I do appreciate the move. The Bombers teams of the late 90's had great talent, but also great depth. With Xavier Nady most likely gone for the season, Hinske provides depth at four different spots and adds a somewhat potent bat off of the bench.
New York gave up two minor leaguers, pitcher Casey Erickson and outfielder Eric Fryer. Both were playing in Single A Ball, Erickson in Charleston and Fryer in Tampa. Erickson had posted a three and three record so far this season with a 2.25 ERA. He was the Yankees 10th round pick in the 2006 draft. Fryer was hitting .250 with 24 RBI.
If Hinske comes in as simply a bench player who gets a spot start over time, I'll be happy. He adds some nice insurance. But now, the Yankees have Johnny Damon, Hideski Matsui, Nick Swisher, Melky Cabrera, Brett Gardner, and Hinske all looking for ABs in a crowded OF. Maybe this means Cody Ransom's days with the team are numbered?

All the major local and national media outlets should be reporting that Ransom and Hinske are idiots...
