The Mets season continues to spiral WAY downward. I wonder how Jerry Manuel feels about captaining this White Star Liner. The Braves beat up on the Mets again, seven to one. Javy Vasquez shut down the Mets line up over seven innings, giving up just six hits and one run. Mets starter Fernando Nieve left the game in the second, straining his quad running to first base.
What does six and two-thirds of perfect baseball get you? Apparently a loss for the Oakland A's. Young lefty Brett Anderson carried the no-hitter into the seventh, when pitch hitter Bobby Abreu grounded a base hit to the left side. Anderson left the game after eight strong innings, with no score for either team on the board. In the tenth, Bobby Abreu homered for the games only run.
The doctor is in, yet again for the Blue Jays. Roy Halladay twirled a gem against the Red Sox in Toronto. Halladay went the distance, giving up just one run on six hits while striking out seven. The Blue Jays won two of three from the Sox over the weekend.
That loss allowed the New York Yankees to creep a little closer, to just a game behind the AL East leaders. The Bombers beat the AL Central leading Detroit Tigers two to one behind a strong performance from Joba Chamerblain. The right hander went six and two-thirds, giving up one run on three hits while striking out eight.
JA Happs continues to impress for the Phillies. Happ earned his seventh win over the year, shutting out the Florida Marlins over seven innings. Final score was five to nothing.
I am getting to a point where I think the Blue Jays will hold onto Halladay. I think Toronto GM JP Riccardi has painted himself into a corner by being so public about listening to offers. If he does make the trade, he has to bring back some ELITE prospects and a major league ready arm. And no matter what he brings back, I think his days in Canada would be numbered. But with all the rumors swirling, I think Riccardi may be more inclined to take a gambler's approach. The Jays should have a very good pitching staff next year. If they can put together a better bullpen and stay healthy, they could, repeat could, make a run at the wild card. Then Riccardi is a hero. He held onto his ace and allowed the team to compete. If they don't make the playoffs, then he is out of a job anyway.
