No this isn't an entry about Coors Light. After cutting the Dodgers lead in the National League West to two games last week, the Colorado Rockies have lost four in a row and are now hearing the footsteps of the Giants for the Wild Card. A resurgent Barry Zito shut down the Rockies offense en route to a 5 to 3 win.
The Rockies had looked like they were set to run to the NL West lead, but have cooled off over the last four. So who is going to win the West and the Wild Card? All I can tell you is don't look for the Braves or Marlins to make a run. They just don't have enough to catch up, in their lineup or in their rotation. You have to love both the Giants and Rockies pitching staffs. The Rocks have a little bit more offense than the Giants and that may just give them enough to stay out in front.
And honestly, how about Barry Zito? Nothing he can do this season or next can make up for the contract he signed and how awful he has been for the Giants. But since the All-Star break, the lefty has a 4 and 2 record with an astonishing 1.92 ERA in nine starts. Zito could, and I say could, be a major factor in pushing the Giants towards the playoffs.
