I don't think I have ever seen anything like this. The Mets continue their cursed season with a 9 to 0 win over the Cardinals at Citi Field. But even in a blowout win, New York lost another player to injury. Rookie Jon Niese was helped off the field in the second inning with a hamstring injury. Tests showed he had torn his upper hamstrung tendon clean off of the bone. Either Bobby Parnell or Elmer Dessens will replace Niese in the Mets rotation.
You have to wonder about being on the Mets 25-man roster right now. Wouldn't you be slightly afraid of sneezing to hard and tearing a hamstring?
It looks like the Phillies made the right call, but will this latest outing be enough. JA Happ dominated the Rockies last night, after enduring trade rumors for a few weeks. Philadelphia beat Colorado 7 to nothing at Citizens Bank Ballpark. Now Happ has to worry about another former Cy Young Award winner taking his spot in the Phils' rotation. Pedro Martinez had a great outing for Reading Phillies, striking out a total of eleven batters in seven innings.
Edwin Jackson went eight innings in a 4 to 2 Tigers win over the Orioles. He struck out eight while giving up two runs on three hits.
It took all my willpower to not lead with the Yankees-Red Sox series. Somehow or another, New York is winless in eight tries against the Sox this year, but hold a two and a half game lead on their rival in the American League East. New York comes in as winners of three in a row and Boston comes in having lost two to the surging Tampa Bay Rays.
Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News doesn't think the Yanks need to sweep. He simply wants to see some of the old stadium swagger from this year's Bombers.
Mike Vacarro of the New York Post also wants to see the boys from the Bronx stand up for themselves against their rival.
Ken Davidoff of Newsday stacks the two teams up.
It will be interesting to see how New York fans treat David Ortiz. There are a few columns floating around saying they don't have a leg to stand on. If they didn't boo Alex Rodriguez, how can they boo David Ortiz. Well, he plays for the Red Sox that's how. While accepting A-Rod's transgressions shouldn't be overlooked, there is no reason for a New York fan to take it easy on Big Papi. He wears the opposing team's uniform, and he wears that team's opposing uniform. On top of all that, when the story on Rodriguez broke, Ortiz was one of the first to comment on it. I say let him have it in his first at-bat. Then let the vitriol of the Yankees-Sox series take over from there.
