This lazy Sunday, the Yankees are looking like the team to beat in the American League East. The Bombers beat the Red Sox for a third straight game in the Bronx. CC Sabathia paced New York to a 5 to 0 win over Boston. The Yanks are now up 4.5 games on the Sox. Andy Pettitte goes up against Jon Lester in the series finale tonight.
John Harper of the New York Daily News has this take on the Boston-New York rivalry.
The Mets season has all but hit rock bottom. They lost to the Padres 3 to 1 in San Diego. Bobby Parnell lasted just 2 1/3 innings. The Mets fell eight games below .500 with the loss.
The Braves and Dodgers went to extra innings with not a single run on the board. The Bravos put two in the top frame of the inning, and LA could only post a single run. Atlanta improved 57 and 54 on the season and hung 5 1/2 games back of the Phillies in the National League East Division race.
Jason Marquis took the mound on Saturday looking to become the National League's first 13 game winner. It looked great through four innings, but Marquis couldn't hold off the Cubs, giving up five earned over six innings. Kosuke Fukudome's home run in the seventh proved to be the game winner, as Chicago won six to five.
David Ortiz continues to deny he ever knowingly took steriods. It is a shame that with the steriod era in baseball, you are guilty until proven innocent. If the NY Times or Washington Post said tomorrow that Albert Pujols was on the list, would anyone be able to question it? But with Ortiz, it sounds very similar to Barry Bonds "clear" and "cream" discussions a few years back. For these athletes, the best of the best in the game of baseball to not know what they are putting into their bodies just seems absolutely absurd to me. Why take that risk? Even if there is no penalty, wouldn't you want to make sure you what you were taking was good for you?
