The New York Yankees pick up their first win over the Boston Red Sox. The Yanks jumped all over John Smoltz, making the veteran righty look mightly old. Final score was 13 to 6. Joba Chamberlain got the win, but clearly was not at his best. He walked seven over five very long innings. The Bombers onslaught in the fourth helped to overshadow Chamberlain's struggles and Jorge Posada's brain malfunction. Posada decided (it seemed) that it was a bad idea to slide into home early in the game. The base running gaffe stifled some early momentum for New York. Posada made up for it in spades though, with a big three run home run to center in the 34 minute bottom of the fourth inning.
Tonight should provide a better pitching matchup, as Josh Beckett goes for the Sox and AJ Burnett pitches for New York.
Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News has a good recap of what the game meant.
Newly acquired Phillies lefty Cliff Lee did not dissapoint in his Citizen's Bank Ballpark debut. Lee went seven innings giving up just one run to the Rockies en route to a three to one Philadelphia win.
The Dodgers get a big lift from outfielder Andre Either. Either hit a three run, walk off home run off of Braves closer Rafael Soriano, lifting LA over the Braves 5 to 4.
