Something you don't see everyday
Many random baseball oddities in the Mets-Phillies game Sunday. Pedro Martinez's first return to Queens since signing with Philadelphia was certainly a memorable one. Martinez struggled but worked his way out of jams just enough to escape with a win. Ollie Perez was nowhere near as lucky. Perez gave up six runs in the first inning and was pulled after going to a 3-0 count against Pedro. Even down big, the Mets battled back, showing some great resiliency. Then, as if the baseball gods strung them along, the entirety of the Mets season was summed up in one play. With two on and no one out in the ninth, and the Mets trailing 9 to 7, little used utility infielder Eric Bruntlett caught a line drive from Jeff Franceour and picked up the unassisted triple play to end the game. Now that is a punch in the gut.
